Although physician training on this topic is not yet federally mandated, some federal agencies would like it to be required. According to a recent FDA consumer bulletin those agencies are working to get Congress to link mandatory physician training to the already required FDA registration number that physicians must have to prescribe controlled substances.
Last fall, PAMED launched its “Pills for Ills, Not Thrills” campaign designed to raise awareness of problems associated with pill-seeking doctor shoppers—patients that hop from physician to physician looking to score prescription pain medication for illegal use. These educational webinars are the next step in that campaign.
